2013 Caring for Climate Business Forum

Caring for Climate – the world’s largest voluntary business and climate initiative – will organize the inaugural Caring for Climate Business Forum: Innovation. Ambition. Collaboration. at COP19/CMP9 on 19-20 November 2013 in Warsaw, Poland. Hosted by the UN Global Compact, UN Environment Programme (including its Finance Initiative) and the secretariat of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Forum will provide a multi-stakeholder platform for dialogue and action among business, investors, civil society, the UN and Government officials.

While progress by business is visible in many areas, the urgency and scope of climate challenges requires broader and even more concerted efforts by business, investors, civil society and government. Accelerating responsible climate practices and driving higher levels of innovation, ambition and collaboration are critical. A United Nations-led business forum that feeds directly to the Conference of Parties (COP/CMP) can contribute significantly to these efforts.

The Caring for Climate Business Forum will be held annually in the context of the UN Climate Change Conference. The Forum seeks to ensure wide participation from representatives around the world, especially from developing and emerging markets. Nearly 400 participants are expected to attend, with the UN Secretary-General, UNFCCC Executive Secretary and Executive Directors of UNEP and the UN Global Compact participating in key aspects of the event.

The Forum

Building on the work of Caring for Climate and its partners, the Forum will showcase the contributions that business and investors can make towards climate action, while providing a high-level platform for exchange and collaboration with policymakers.

More specifically, the Forum aims to bring greater scale to business innovation on climate change; give further encouragement to business and governments to raise ambition on climate policies; and encourage collaboration among business, the UN, Governments and other stakeholders.

The Forum will serve as a launching ground for corporate climate action. New activities, resources and commitments will be announced by individual businesses, multiple companies, investors and stock exchanges, and public-private partnerships in support of the global climate change agenda.

Sessions and Themes

Plenary sessions and thematic action workshops will maximize interaction between participants. Up to 15 sessions organized by Caring for Climate and selected partners will focus on priority themes linked to the UNFCCC agenda covering mitigation, adaptation, technology and finance.

A high-level meeting on 20 November will distil the outcomes from the first day – including a compendium of leading climate practices, innovations, collaborations and commitments to action across key climate change themes – and put forward recommendations for Government actions that would help bring greater scale and quality to corporate climate leadership globally.
